Computer Memory Issues

Computer Memory Issues

Bad memory can cause various issues on your computer such as failure to boot, random computer crashes, random reboots or restart, and failure to install software. Windows Vista and 7 have a Windows Memory Diagnostics tool which can be used to test the memory the next time the computer restarts. There are also other memory testing tools available such as Memetest86 and DocMemory. To test if the issues are really caused by memory without any of the aforementioned tools, swap your memory with another computers' memory. Using known good memory to replace the memory in the faulty computer is a common and effective way to check things out.

Memory Problems

A memory issue may be caused by hardware problems, lack of maintenance and even software issues. Memory problems involve "blue screen" and various errors to a system crash and unrecognized memory. Serious memory problems can be found rapidly as BIOS (basic input/output system) checks the system memory every time the system boots. Besides the aforementioned deadly "blue screen," the following symptoms may indicate memory failure: constant beeping sound since system boot, system freezes or reboots and unstable Windows programs.

Possible Damages to Memory

Computer memory is vulnerable to various situations which can pose damage to your memory: electrostatic shock from inappropriate operations, poor power supplies, and high memory voltage for over-clocking. In a humid and dusty environment, the contacts between the memory module and its slot can be interfered with. Heat can also cause problems to memory. In these cases, you can reinstall the computer memory modules by removing them, checking for damage, cleaning the contacts of the module with a soft cloth or PC cleaner product and placing them back.

Other Computer Memory Issues

Blue screens while installing a Windows OS are definitely caused by memory failure. Crashes during memory intensive programs such as 3D games can possibly be caused by bad memory. Distorted graphics on computers can be attributed to graphic card memory problems. The worst situation is when the computer won't boot, in this case, any memory diagnosis software cannot be used and you have to replace your memory with known good memory and boot again.
