Compatibility For The Dell Ac Adapter Part Number Pa4e

Dell's PA-4E AC adapter provides 130 watts of power for numerous Dell products. Designed primarily as the adapter for Dell's laptop docking stations, the PA-4E also works as the standalone power adapter for various models of Dell laptops. The PA-4E adapter is also known by the part numbers X408G, D232H and 330-1829.

Compatible Laptops

The laptop connector tip for the PA-4E allows the adapter to fit into not only the power jack of Dell's docking stations, but also that of numerous Dell laptop models, including those in the Latitude series, the Precision line and numerous XPS models. Dell's high-performing Alienware series can also utilize the PA-4E's high wattage supply, as can the Inspiron line. Not each and every model in the various Dell lines are compatible with the PA-4E, however, so make sure the connector tip matches perfectly to avoid the possibility of damaging the laptop.

Wattage Information

When determining laptop compatibility for the PA-4E adapter, verify that the unit will provide the proper amount of wattage that your Dell laptop requires. The PA-4E offers 130W of electricity, enough to power both a laptop and docking station at the same time. Most laptops require a wattage range of 65W to 90W, and the wattage is calculated by multiplying the laptop's required voltage and amperage together. AC adapters can offer more than the required wattage but never less to avoid possible damage to the laptop or docking station.

Compatible Replacement Adapter

If you're looking for a compatible replacement for the PA-4E, the two most important factors to compare are the laptop connector tip and the wattage. The 130W output of the PA-4E is almost one and a half times what most laptop adapters provide, meaning that a common 90W adapter will not work. Any replacement adapter for the PA-4E must provide at least 130W of power, or 19.5V and 6.7A. Just as important is the connector tip that connects to the docking station or laptop, as not every tip will fit into every laptop model.

Considerations

Although third-party adapters offer high compatibility with most AC adapters and typically cost less than name brand versions, Dell recommends using only Dell brand adapters to avoid possible issues with its laptops and docking stations. Using a third-party adapter with your laptop or docking station may actually void your warranty, so be sure to read the fine print in your coverage before purchasing a non-Dell product.
