Stored on a chip on the motherboard, the Basic Input Output System is responsible for starting your hardware during the boot process and the communications between your hardware and the operating system. You can "flash" your BIOS to upgrade to the latest version for your system. Every BIOS upgrade is specific to a certain brand, model and operating system to ensure you receive the correct software for your system. Flash the BIOS if you notice problems with your system after upgrading or changing your operating system or hardware.
Instructions
1. Visit your motherboard or computer manufacturer's website to obtain the BIOS upgrade file. See the "Support" or "Help" section and enter any necessary information such as your computer model, line and operating system. Download the latest BIOS version.
2. Read all instructions provided with the BIOS upgrade file. These are located either on the website from which you downloaded the upgrade or in the downloaded file itself.
3. Insert any required removable media. Computers prior to Windows XP typically require a floppy disk or CD. Computers pre-installed with Windows XP or later typically require a CD or USB drive. Many manufacturers now use desktop executable files.
4. Create a bootable disk by using the instructions provided with the BIOS upgrade file. If no media is required, skip to step 6.
5. Place the BIOS upgrade file on the removable media.
6. Restart your system with the removable media inserted.
If using a desktop executable file, double-click the file to start the BIOS flash process. Follow any prompts to flash the BIOS.
7. Boot from the removable media. If your system is not set to boot from the removable media, enter your BIOS and change the boot order. The key to enter the BIOS is displayed on the first screen during the boot process.
8. Wait for the BIOS to flash and your system to restart. Some manufacturers require you to enter commands in order to flash the BIOS. These commands are provided in the BIOS upgrade instructions.
