Reboot A Power Switch

You may need to reboot a computer's power switch to reload a software program.

Power switches are found in all kinds of electronic devices: power tools, power stations, cell phones, computers and televisions. They are used to switch on or switch off the device they are attached to. Reboot is a term most often used with computers and computer peripherals, such as printers and scanners, to describe the turning off and turning back on of the device to reload its software. Learning reboot a power switch is a basic skill you must learn when operating any electronic tool.

Instructions

1. Locate the power switch. The location will depend on the type of device and the design chosen by the manufacturer. For example, laptops often have a power switch button with a power on/off symbol located close to the monitor. PCs usually have a large circular power switch either at the top or bottom of the computer case. Motherboard power switches, on the other hand, are usually placed on the bottom right corner.

2. Turn or press the power switch off and then turn it back on. In some electric devices, a power switch is made of a toggle you must flip on or off, while other devices rely on a common button you press to operate. With some power switches, you can operate different functions depending on how long and how far you press the button. Motherboard power switches, for instance, may turn from on to sleep, if pressed once, and from on to off, if you press for more than four seconds.

3. Wait for the electronic device to reload its software. You will not be able to use a device while it is rebooting. Most electric devices will provide you with a signal when it has finished rebooting.
