Basic Components Of A Digital Computer System

A display and keyboard are basic components of a computer.

Many people around the world depend on digital computers, whether for work or recreational purposes. What makes them digital as opposed to analog is their representation of data through the use of binary code. Although many people interact with them on a daily basis, few people understand the network of devices that serve to provide all the functionality that computers offer.

Central Processing Unit

The Central Processing Unit (CPU) is considered the brains of the computer. The CPU plugs into the motherboard, which is a central connector point for all devices within the computer. Any commands or functions are calculated within the CPU. Since it calculates the processes, it is also one of the major components associated with the computer's speed.

Memory

When discussing computer memory, the most well-known type is Random Access Memory (RAM). It is another major component that affects the computer's speed. RAM is volatile memory that is erased once the computer is turned off. It stores temporary processes that the computer performs. When a user has many applications open but a low amount of RAM, the processes will slow down, as each one requires a specified amount of RAM.

Another major type of memory that people are familiar with is Hard Drive Memory. Much different from RAM, the hard drive serves as a permanent storage space that is readable and writable by the user. It takes longer for the computer to access the hard drive than applications in RAM.

Input and Output Devices

Input and output devices are the types that most people are familiar with. Input devices --- such as the keyboard and mouse --- enable you to control the functions of a computer. They provide a method to access files and folders and to alter data. Output devices are those that display data. Monitors are the most familiar type as they provide a visual representation of the binary code within a computer's CPU. Other peripherals include devices, such as scanners or printers, where information can be sent.
