Upgrade A Video Card In A Gateway M6866 Laptop

Video cards in some laptops connect to a socket on the motherboard.


Video cards that are included on a laptop computer are ordinarily built into the motherboard. However, some types of laptop computers, such as the Gateway M-6866, have a video card that is attached to a socket on the motherboard. This means that the video card can be upgraded to increase the performance of the computer. In order to do this you will need to gain access to the motherboard inside the laptop.


Instructions


1. Unplug the power cord for the laptop and then place the unit face-down on a table or desk.


2. Press the release latch for the battery. Take the battery out of the laptop and set it aside.


3. Turn the laptop over so that the top is facing up. Open the display and then locate the small cover that is above the keyboard.


4. Pry up on the cover gently with the flat-head screwdriver to separate it from the case. Take the cover off and set it aside.


5. Find and remove the two screws that are on the left and right side of the keyboard. Lift the keyboard up from the case and then disconnect the ribbon cable from the motherboard. Set the keyboard aside.


6. Locate the CPU cooling fan that is in the upper right corner. Find and disconnect the power cable from the motherboard. Remove the four screws that are used to secure the fan assembly to the case. Lift the fan out of the case and set it aside.


7. Locate the heatsink for the video card near the middle of the case. This will look link a small piece of metal with small copper pipes that extend out. Find and remove the screws that are securing the heatsink to the case. Lift the heatsink out of the case and set it aside.


8. Wipe the thermal grease, if any, from the video card using the paper towel.


9. Find and remove the two screws that are used to secure the video card to the motherboard. Gently pull on the video card to remove it from the socket on the motherboard.


10. Insert the new video card into the socket on the motherboard. Secure it by tightening the screws. Re-attach the heatsink to the video card and then reassemble the remaining parts.
