Graphics Cards That Are Compatible With An Asus K8vx Motherboard

Graphics cards ouput video to monitors.

The Asus K8V-X is a Socket 754 motherboard that uses the VIA K8T800 chipset and is compatible with AMD Athlon 54 and Sempron CPUs. Although the motherboard has room for a fast CPU and up to 2GB of memory, the lack of on-board video means you will need to install your own video card to use your computer for video purposes. Understand the types of graphics cards that are compatible with the Asus K8V-X to obtain the best performance possible from your system.

AGP Video Cards

The AGP standard may be outdated, but AGP cards are still available that pack a lot of punch.

The Asus K8V-X motherboard has a single AGP slot that can accommodate newer AGP 8x as well as older AGP 4x cards. Although graphics card manufacturers have largely abandoned AGP in favor of the faster PCI-Express standard, there are still a number of AGP cards on the market. AGP cards are best suited for graphics-intensive applications such as video games and movie editing.

PCI Cards

The Asus K8V-X has four PCI slots.

A number of video cards are available on the market that connect to one of the four PCI slots on the Asus K8V-X motherboard. These cards are generally inexpensive and because of the low bandwidth limit of the PCI bus, are best suited for less intensive applications. Install a PCI card if you are a casual video game player or on a tight budget.

External Video Cards

External video cards connect via USB.

External video cards plug into the USB ports on the Asus K8V-X motherboard through the exterior of the computer. They are a good alternative for those who do not feel comfortable cracking open a computer. However, they tend to be more expensive and less powerful than PCI or AGP video cards.
