Increase The Size Of A C Drive

Increase the Size of a C: Drive

A computer's "C:" drive lies on the unit's hard drive and this is where most people store their essential files and information. Some files, especially movies, music, and photos, can eat through a "C:" drive's gigabytes pretty quickly. Unfortunately, a hard drive is a fixed object, meaning that a 250 GB hard drive will always be a 250 GB hard drive and there is no way to take that hard drive and make it larger. Therefore, if you want to increase the size of your "C:" drive, you have to replace the hard drive.

Instructions

1. If needed, make a backup copy of any important information, such as music, movies, photos and résumés, currently on your computer. DVDs, flash drives and external hard drives are excellent places to store such information.

2. Turn the computer off. If replacing the hard drive in a computer tower, remove the screws on the back of the computer that hold the side panel in place, then remove the side panel. If replacing the hard drive in a laptop, flip the laptop upside down and find an icon that looks like three discs--this is where your hard drive is located. Remove the screws closest to this icon and remove the panel that covers the hard drive.

3. Remove the computer's original hard drive. In a computer tower, this may require unscrewing some additional hinges or casings. In a laptop, this may involve removing extra cradles or connection adapters.

4. Replace the original hard drive with the new hard drive, remembering to connect it to the tower or laptop in the same way as the original hard drive.

5. Close the casing (replace the lid for a laptop) and turn on the computer. Use your computer's operating system discs to install Windows (or OS X) on the new hard drive.
