Wire A Cooling Fan On A Computer

PC fans are essential to keep the internal environment of your computer cool.

Wiring a cooling fan in a computer is a simple process. The wire that protrudes from a computer fan has a connector on the end that simply needs to be matched to a corresponding socket in your PC. The type of socket required will depend on the fan you buy, but most fans have a plug with three or four pins, both of which are easy to wire up to your machine.

Instructions

1. Turn off your PC and take off the side panel of your computer, either by unscrewing the screws or operating the release mechanism, depending on your case.

2. Take the fan out of its packaging and decide whether you want it to blow air in or out of your PC, if the fan you purchased has the option. This will affect how you mount the fan.

3. Screw the fan to the case using the screws provided.

4. Identify what kind of connection is on the end of your wire. If it is a four-pin (also known as a molex) plug, find a spare corresponding molex connector that is protruding from your power supply. If it is a three-pin connector, find the corresponding three-pin socket that is located on your motherboard.

5. Turn your computer on to check the fan is working and replace the case panel when you are satisfied.
