You've got your music files and MP3 player but the player doesn't support the type of file your songs are in. Fortunately, there are multiple methods to easily convert various audio formats to MP3. Methods range from using popular software to converting the files directly through the Internet. Whichever method you choose, you'll quickly find how simple converting music files to MP3 can be.

Converting A CD with Windows Media Player


1. Turn on your PC and insert a music CD you'd like to convert to MP3. Click the Start orb and type "Windows Media Player" into the search box then hit "Enter" to bring up Windows Media Player.


2. Click the "Rip" tab near the top of the window to see the tracks on the CD. Click on the small arrow directly under the word "Rip" on the appropriate tab and select "More Options" from the drop-down menu.


3. Use this window to specify where to save the ripped files and change the format to MP3 under "Rip Settings." You can adjust the size/quality of the soon-to-be-converted files by adjusting the slider near the bottom of the window.


4. Click "Apply" and "OK" to return to the main ripping window. Un-check any songs on the CD you don't want to convert and click "Rip Music."

5. Click the "Start" orb and type "iTunes" into the search bar before hitting "Enter." Once the program opens, click "Edit" then "Preferences."


6. Click "General" then "Importing Settings" to display the "Import Using" menu. Choose your desired encoding format encoding format and press "OK."


7. Select the songs you'd like to convert from your iTunes library by holding "Ctrl" and clicking the files. Release "Ctrl" and right-click any of the selected tracks. Choose "Create MP3 version" and wait while the files are converted.

8. Open your Internet browser and navigate to one of the many websites that convert files to MP3 for free (see Resources).


9. Fill in the required information. While this differs between websites, the site will typically ask you to specify the file type to convert to and the quality of the conversion. Click the button designated for choosing the file to convert.


10. Navigate to the location of the file you'd like to convert using Windows Explorer. Select your desired file and click "Open."


11. Review the information presented, ensuring you've chosen the correct file, format and any other settings. Click the button designated to begin the conversion, which should be clearly labeled with a command such as "Convert File" or "Begin."
