The BIOS is stored on a chip on the motherboard.
Gigabyte provides a free utility you can use to download and install the latest BIOS for your Gigabyte motherboard. The BIOS is stored on a ROM chip on the motherboard, and loads when the computer first boots up. On old motherboards you couldn't overwrite the ROM, so upgrading the BIOS meant popping the ROM chip out of the socket and replacing it. Modern motherboards use a different configuration, enabling you to "flash" a new BIOS to the chip without replacing any parts.
Instructions
1. Find the model number of your Gigabyte motherboard. Different models require different BIOS versions. Download and install a hardware diagnostic utility. Run the software, and select "Motherboard." The software will collect data about your computer, and display the make and model of your motherboard. See Resources for a link to three hardware diagnostic utilities, one of which is freeware. All three work approximately the same way.
2. Download @BIOS, Gigabyte's live BIOS update utility (see Resources).
3. Disable Intel hyper-threading, if your system supports it. Restart your computer. While your computer is booting up, it will prompt you with a key to press to enter BIOS setup. The specific key will vary with your hardware. Enter setup, and disable hyper-threading. The procedure and menu options will vary with your BIOS, so it is impossible to give exact instructions. Exit setup, save your changes, and boot into Windows.
4. Turn off any anti-virus or firewall software. It may interfere with @BIOS, causing your BIOS to install incorrectly.
5. Run @BIOS. It will display information about your motherboard at the top of the window. Confirm that the motherboard model number displayed is correct. Check the box labeled "Update Via Internet."
6. Click the "Save Current BIOS" button to back up your old BIOS.
7. Click the "Update New BIOS" button. @BIOS will prompt you to select a download server. Choose the server closest to you, and click "OK" to proceed.
8. Select the BIOS version you want from the list @BIOS displays. @BIOS automatically searches for the latest BIOS version for your motherboard. Click "OK" to download the new BIOS. When the download is finished, a prompt will appear asking if you want to update the BIOS. Click "OK" to flash the new BIOS to the chip on your motherboard.
9. Press "OK" in the dialog box that appears after the install is finished, and click "Exit" to close @BIOS. Restart your computer.
10. Enter BIOS setup while your computer is booting by pressing the same key as before. Use the arrow keys to highlight the option "Load Fail-Safe Defaults," and press "Enter." Press "Y" to confirm loading the fail-safe defaults. You should load default settings when booting the computer with the new BIOS for the first time to make sure that everything works.
11. Select "Save and Exit Setup," and press "Enter." Press the "Y" key to confirm that you want to save and exit.
