Connecting the S/PDIF connector to the motherboard.
The M2NPV-VM S/PDIF connector is an optional port that connects to a hanger bracket which fits into a slot on the back of the case. This port provides direct digital audio output to external devices following the Sony/Philips Digital Interface (S/PDIF) standard. Common to modern stereo systems and home theater systems, the S/PDIF allows high-quality digital sound to be sent from the computer to the audio equipment without any processing overhead or distortion. Most computer S/PDIF connectors utilize an optical output.
Instructions
1. Perform a backup of all important or critical files on the computer prior to installing the S/PDIF connector.
2. Power down the system. Unplug the power cord from the wall and remove the cover. Attach the anti-static wrist strap to one wrist and to a bare metal section of the case. Make sure the power is disconnected, as indicated by the small LED on the motherboard, and do not begin work until the LED goes out.
3. Remove a blank slot cover from the rear port section of the case. Slide the S/PDIF connector hanger bracket down the slot and align the bottom of the hanger bracket with the slot until it is fully seated and flush with the case. Attach the hanger bracket with a single screw to keep it in place.
4. Connect the lead from the S/PDIF hanger bracket to the motherboard location marked "SPDIF OUT" located near the PCI slots on the edge of the motherboard, between the USB connector and the internal audio connector. Align the connector so that all three wires are seated over the three actual pins on the motherboard, and the key pin-hole that is plugged and does not have a wire is seated over the missing pin on the motherboard.
5. Replace the cover and connect the S/PDIF optical cable from the back of the computer to the audio equipment.
