Geforce 8400 Vs Radeon 3200

The GeForce 8400 and the Radeon 3200 -- officially known as the Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS and the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3200 -- are graphics processing units from GPU manufacturer Nvidia and semiconductor company Advanced Micro Devices, respectively. Both products are low-end cards from their respective manufacturers. The Nvidia GPU, released in 2007, goes on desktop personal computers; and the ATI card, debuting in 2008, is applied on laptop PCs.

Memory

Each Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3200 card shares the system memory of the PC for graphics and video capabilities. The system memory is based on second-generational Double Data Rate Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory architecture, or DDR2 SDRAM. Each card offers 512MB of shared memory.

Clock Rate

The Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS and the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3200 cards have three types of speeds, collectively known as the clock rate. The core clock denotes the speed of the GPU processor's operation, the shader clock is the rate of operation of software instructions used for rendering graphics effects and the memory clock is the rate at which the memory operates. The GeForce 8400 GS has a core clock of 567MHz, shader clock of 1,400MHz and memory clock of 400MHz. The ATI has a 500-MHz core clock and shader clock, and 800-MHz memory clock.

Fill Rate

The fill rate is the number of pixels per second the GPU can render and write to video memory. This aspect of the graphics card determines the speed of the card in rendering pixels to the screen. The GeForce 8400 GS has a fill rate of 3.6 billion pixels per second. The Mobility Radeon HD 3200, on the other hand, has a fill rate of 2 billion pixels per second.

Application Programming Interface

The Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3200 uses application programming interfaces such as DirectX and Open Graphics Library for its various multimedia-related functions, from two- and three-dimensional graphics processing to streaming digital audio/video content. The Nvidia and ATI cards are compatible with the DirectX 10 and OpenGL 2.0 versions in particular.
