The processor is the heart of your computer, responsible for performing all calculations required by all installed programs on your machine. A good processor can make or break the overall speed of your system, as it is a bottleneck that influences the entire machine. Comparing new processors is the process of understand the processor variables to reach a decision as to which model is appropriate for your needs and budget. These are the elements to consider when purchasing a new computer processor.

1. Compare the processors based on raw speed. For newer computers, this rating is provided in gigahertz (e.g., 2.4 GHz processor). One gigahertz means the computer can perform one billion operations per second. When comparing processors, this is the benchmark from which you should begin, as a processor that can perform more operations per second will almost always be faster in the real world.


2. Research the amount of cache memory on the processors. Cache memory is a small amount of ultra-fast memory that is stored directly on the processor. The rule to follow is "more is better" when it comes to cache. A processor that is slightly slower in clock speed can still be faster in real-world applications if it has more cache memory than another processor, making it a substantial consideration in your purchase.


3. Look at the number of "cores" in the processor--for example, whether the processor is a dual or quad core. Each core will function as an independent processor. In other words, a dual-core processor running at 2.0 GHz will be performing four billion calculations per second--two billion in each core. This is important, but it will only add up to additional performance if your software is programmed to take advantage of multiple cores, making it less of a consideration than either the raw speed or cache memory of the processor.
