Remove The Motherboard Battery From My Computer

Remove the Motherboard Battery From My Computer

Removing your motherboard's battery may be necessary if you are regularly receiving CMOS errors, such as "CMOS checksum error" or "CMOS Battery Failure." Errors such as these can indicate that your battery is failing and needs to be replaced. In some cases, removing the battery may also be necessary in order to clear a computer's BIOS password.

Removing the battery from your laptop or desktop computer typically requires only a few simple steps and can be accomplished in just minutes.

Instructions

Desktop Computer

1. Power down the computer completely. Remove the power cords, the mouse and keyboard, the display monitor and any other peripheral devices.

2. Remove the computer's cover. Some covers can simply be popped or slid off, whereas others will need to be unscrewed. Ground yourself by touching the chassis or by wearing an anti-static wrist-strap.

3. Locate your motherboard's battery. It is small, coin-shaped component, sometimes located on the bottom-left side of the motherboard.

4. Grab the edge of the motherboard battery with your fingers, then lift it from its container. Depending on the computer, you may need to use one hand to release a lever holding the battery in place; then, using your other hand, lift the battery from its container.

Laptop Computers

5. Power down the laptop completely. Remove the AC adapter, as well as any other peripherals connected to the computer. Close the laptop's lid.

6. Touch a piece of unpainted metal, or put on an anti-static wrist-strap, to ground yourself. Turn the laptop over, so that the bottom is facing up.

7. Locate the battery panel. Normally it is located on the back of the laptop, but if you are not sure where the battery is, refer to your laptop's documentation. Unscrew the battery cover, or release one or two latches (depending on your laptop's model), and slide the battery out from the laptop.
