Upgrade I7950 Processor To I7970 Six Core Processor

The i7-950 is roughly half the price of the i7-970.

The Intel Core i7 line of CPUs fit into socket LGA1366 motherboards and allow for a wide variety of choices when it comes to price and speed. The i7-950 processor has four cores and can be easily upgraded to a i7-970 to bring the amount of cores up to six. Care must be taken when changing the CPUs because the heat sink can become too attached to old CPUs.

Instructions

1. Power down the computer and disconnect all power and peripheral cables.

2. Open the computer case with the screwdriver and attach the anti-static wristband's alligator clip to the power supply's ground.

3. Unlatch or unscrew the fan and heat sink from the motherboard. Thermal grease becomes hard over time and it might be difficult to pry the heat sink from the CPU. Be extremely careful not to rip it off.

4. Unlock the CPU socket lever on the motherboard slowly to push the i7-950 CPU out. Grab the CPU taking care not to touch the circuits. Place the CPU into an anti-static bag.

5. Insert the i7-970 six core processor into the motherboard's CPU socket. Lock down the CPU using the lever on the motherboard.

6. Apply thermal grease evenly to the top of the i7-970 six core processor. Place the heat sink and fan on top of the CPU, then use the brackets to lock the assembly into place.

7. Disconnect the anti-static wristband from the power supply and close the computer case. Tighten the screws using the screwdriver, reconnect the cables and then press the power button to load up the BIOS and operating system.
