Bios Chip Information

The BIOS chip is mounted directly on the motherboard and cannot be removed.

The Basic Input/Output System, or BIOS, is a preprogrammed chip located on your motherboard that tells your computer what to do from the moment you power it up until your operating system kicks in.

Functionality

The BIOS chip communicates with all the components and performs the Power-On Self Test, or POST, each time you turn on your PC. If the test fails, the BIOS will alert you via a system of error codes.

Troubleshooting

The BIOS uses a system of audio beeps to indicate if the components are working properly or not. A short beep means everything's fine, while multiple beeps may indicate problems with certain components.

Caution

Even though initially BIOS chips used read-only memory chips, newer BIOS chips use flash memory to allow BIOS updates. However, the BIOS update process is risky, as it can damage your motherboard if not executed correctly.
