The motherboard controls the computer system.
The motherboard is control center of the computer system. It manages the processor, video card, sound system, hard drives, keyboard and mouse. The ASUS P4B motherboard was released in 2001.
Processor
The ASUS P4B is designed for an Intel Pentium 4 Northwood processor with a 400MHz system bus. It has a 478-pin, zero-insertion force socket for the processor.
Northbridge/Southbridge
The P4B's Northbridge and Southbridge use the Intel 845 Brookdale chipset. The Northbridge is an Intel Memory Controller Hub, or MCH, and controls the processor, memory and graphics card. It is interconnected to the Southbridge, an Intel I/O Controller Hub that controls the input/output functions, including hard drives.
Memory
The P4B has three, 168-pin memory sockets for PC100/133 SDRAM. The motherboard supports up to 3GB of memory.
Input/Output
The motherboard has connectors for a floppy disk drive and up to four Ultra DMA/100/66 IDE hard drives or DVD/CD-ROM drives. It has six, 32-bit PCI 2.2 expansion slots and an AGP graphics slot.
Sound and USB
The P4B has AC '97 onboard sound with a microphone jack and two output jacks. It has two USB ports.
