Get files off your laptop by removing the hard drive.
If your laptop motherboard has died, you may think there's no way to get the files off the hard drive without replacing the motherboard. With the help of an external hard-drive enclosure and some disassembly of your laptop, you can get your files without having to replace any parts. You need to have moderate experience with taking apart computer components to perform this process.
Instructions
1. Turn off your laptop computer, unplug it and remove its battery. Turn the computer upside-down and locate the panel that covers the laptop hard drive. This panel is usually labeled with a hard-drive symbol, which looks like a small cylinder or can. Use caution when removing the hard drive so you don't harm the hard-drive pins.
2. Remove the laptop hard-drive panel with a screwdriver and remove the hard drive from the computer. Insert the hard drive into your external hard-drive enclosure.
3. Plug your external hard-drive enclosure into your spare computer and wait for the computer to detect the hard drive. Once the drive has been detected, you can copy files from the drive onto your spare computer.
