ASUSTeK Computer Inc. is a Taiwanese computer product company. Among its many products are laptops, servers, mobile phones and motherboards. While making parts for its own proprietary products, ASUS also provides equipment to other manufacturers for integration into their own products. The M2N-E motherboard is one such part and was designed with maximum compatibility with AMD products in mind, including dual-core AMD processors.
CPU Support
The ASUS M2N-E features socket support for a wide range of AMD microprocessors. Specifically, it's designed to work with the AMD AM2+, AM2 Phenom FX running at 2,000 megatransfers per second, Phenom running at 2,000MTps, Athlon 64 X2, Athlon 64 FC, Athlon 64 and Sempron processors. It uses AMD64 architecture for simultaneous 32-bit and 64-bit computing, as well as AMD's Cool'n'Quiet CPU speed throttling technology. It's also AMD Live ready.
Chipset & Front Side Bus
The ASUS M2N-E comes equipped with an NVIDIA nForce 570 Ultra media and communications processor. Depending on the processor installed, the front side bus runs at 1,600 or 2,000MTps. Megatransfers per second refers to the number of data transmissions made by the processor over the the course of a second. A single megatransfer per second equals one million data transfers in one second.
Memory & Expansion Slots
The ASUS M2N-E is designed with dual channel memory architecture, and can support up to four 240-pin dual inline memory modules. It can support upwards of 8GB of Error Correct Code or non-EEC unbuffered DDR2 SDRAM, running at 800, 677 or 533 MHz. However, ASUS' specifications warn that using 4GB or more may not result in maximum performance. This is due to Windows 32-bit operating systems not recognizing more than 3GB of RAM memory. The ASUS M2N-E motherboard is also equipped with one PCI Express x16 slot, one PCI Express x4 slot, two PCI Express x1 slots and three PCI 2.2 slots.
Storage
The ASUS M2N-E's hard-disk storage area is supported by its NVIDIA nForce 570 Ultra MCP. This includes Ultra direct memory access support at 133, 100, 66 and 33 MHz. It also supports six Serial ATA connections running at 3Gbps. It also features NVIDIA MediaShield redundant array of independent disks; support for RAID 0, 1, 0+1 and 5; as well as Just a Box of Disks -- basically independent disk drives -- spanning across all connected Serial ATA drives.
LAN & USB Ports
The NVIDIA nForce 570 Ultra MCP included in the ASUS M2N-E is outfitted with a built-in gigabit media access controller, equipped with an external Marvell physical layer chip. It also supports up to a total of 10 USB 2.0/1.1 ports, four of which are external. The motherboard has three further USB 2.0 ports internally, with support for a total of six internal ports.
Audio & BIOS
The ASUS M2N-E supports ADI 1988 8-channel high definition audio. It also features jack sensing, enumeration, multi-streaming and jack re-tasking. It also features a 4Mb AWARD BIOS, plug-and-play compatibility, a desktop management interface, Wired for Management 2.0, and SM BIOS 2.3.
Internal & Back Panel Connectors
The ASUS M2N-E's internal ports include three standard USB 2.0 connectors with support for up to six ports. It also has six SATA hard-disk connectors, a floppy disk connector, an IDE connector for two devices, and a parallel connector. It also has an ADH connector, a CPU connector, a power fan connector, a CD audio in connector and a system panel connector. There are also four chassis connectors, a chassis intrusion connector, an S/PDIF output connector, a 24-pin ATV power connector, a 4-pin ATX 12V power connector and a front panel audio connector. Externally, the M2N-E features four USB 2.0/1.1 ports, 8-channel audio ports, a COM port, an RJ45 LAN port, a coaxial S/PDIF out port, and PS/2 ports for keyboard and mouse.
