The motherboard is the backbone of any computer system. The features and components that the motherboard supports determines the overall speed and capability of a given computer. The motherboard of the Dell D600 laptop supports a variety of useful features, including a built-in smart card reader and a single PC card port. This port is typically used for interfacing with network cards, modems or external storage devices.
Memory
The Dell D600 supports up to two gigabytes of random access memory (RAM) using the DDR memory standard. The D600 motherboard has room for up to two 3.3-volt DDR SDRAM memory modules. This motherboard supports RAM modules in sizes ranging from 128 megabytes to one gigabyte. The D600 also requires RAM that is rated to at least 266 MHz.
Processor
The D600 motherboard only supports Pentium brand M processors. The D600 features two on-board data caches for transferring information to and from the processor. These caches are known as the L1 and L2 caches. The D600 L1 cache is 64 kilobytes in size, while its L2 cache is rated at either one or two megabytes. Dell D600s with a processor rated between 1.3 and 1.7 gigahertz have the slower one megabyte cache while D600s with a 1.8 GHz processor uses faster two megabyte cache.
Networking
The Dell D600 motherboard has an integrated network adapter. In conjunction with the included dial-up modem and wireless networking capability, the D600 is capable of negotiating most types of network connections. The network adapter uses a standard RJ-45 jack to make Ethernet connections and supports data transfer rates of 10/100/1000.
PC Card Controller
The D600 motherboard supports the connection of a single PCMCIA or PC card. PC cards supported by this motherboard include both type I and type II cards that operate at either 3.3 or 5 volts. The PC card connector is compatible with PC cards using a 68-pin connector.
