Connect A Spdif Cable To A Stereo System

S/PDIF cables connect computers to audio equipment.

S/PDIF, or Sony/Philips Digital Interconnect Format, is a common digital audio output found on laptops and desktop computers. Given the proliferation of computer-based music libraries and the desire to consume multimedia content through a home stereo or theater, connecting the S/PDIF cable to such a system is desirable. Fortunately, this is a simple process, involving one cable connection and a few changes in the computer's setup menu.

Instructions

Physical Connection

1. Locate the digital audio port on the back of the laptop or PC. Find a black or orange RCA-style cable for digital coax, or a small black plug or door for optical.

2. Plug the appropriate cable into the computer's S/PDIF jack. Route the cable as required to the stereo or receiver.

3. Find the matching jack on the stereo or home theater receiver. Plug the other end of the digital audio cable into this port.

Menu Settings

4. Click the "Start" button located at the lower left of the computer's monitor.

5. Click on the "Control Panel" option on the next menu. Find the "Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices" option. Click on it.

6. Locate the "Sounds and Audio Devices" option towards the lower portion of the next menu. Click on the "Device Volume" button within this box.

7. Click on the "Advanced" button within the "Device Volume" box. Click on the next "Advanced" button at the lower left corner of the following window.

8. Click the "Enable SPDIF" box to enable digital audio output. Click on the "OK" button. Click on the red "X" at the upper corner of the open audio setup windows to close them.
