Choose The Right Memory For My Computer

Random Access Memory Module

Different RAM types are not interchangeable. While different speeds within a given type are generally backward compatible, placing faster RAM in a motherboard designed for slower RAM will not increase its speed. Placing slower RAM in a motherboard designed for faster RAM can significantly bog down your system performance, if it works at all. Thus, the safest bet is to find out what type of RAM is already installed on your computer and stick to it.

Instructions

PC Users

1. Click "Start" in the lower left-hand corner of your screen, and select "Control Panel" from the menu options.

2. Click "System," and choose the tab labeled "General." This will display information about your RAM, though it may only tell you the amount of RAM currently installed on your computer. If it does not specify your RAM type, speed and maximum capacity, follow the remaining steps.

3. Look at your computer chassis or consult your owner's manual for your computer's make and model number. Make a note of these.

4. Go to the first link in the resource section below.

5. Select your computer's make and model number from the drop-down menus provided.

6. The resulting screen will display the RAM type, speed and your computer's maximum memory capacity. Make a note of these and have it with you when purchasing new RAM.

Mac Users

7. Click on the Apple icon in the upper left-hand corner of your screen and choose "About this Mac" from the drop-down menu.

8. Select "More Info..." from the "About this Mac" window. This opens a window displaying your computer's specifications.

9. Click "Memory" from the "Contents" list on the left-hand side of the specifications window. This displays information about your RAM.

10. Make a note of your RAM type, speed, size, and your computer's total RAM capacity.

11. If you do not see your RAM capacity, follow the second link in the resources section. This is a Mac memory adviser tool. Select your computer's make and model number from the drop-down menus provided, and it will tell you your Mac's RAM capacity. Have this information with you when you purchase new RAM.
