Sound problems on a computer are mainly caused by corrupt, damaged or missing drivers. Sound drivers can become damaged or go missing for a number of reasons, including being corrupted by software. By doing a little troubleshooting, you can fix sound problems and regain audio on your computer.
Instructions
1. Restart your computer. If the computer still has no sound, check the "Device Manager" to see if the sound drivers are present. To do this, click the Windows "Start" button and click "Control Panel."
2. Double-click the "Systems" icon and click the "Hardware" tab. Click the "Device Manager" button.
3. Scroll down the Device Manager window and click the "+" button next to "Sound, Video" to expand the options. If you see a yellow question mark under sound, it means the sound drivers are missing and have to be installed.
4. Write down your computer model number. It is generally found on the back of the computer.
5. Go to your computer manufacturer's website and find the "Downloads" section. Use the model number to locate the necessary sound drivers. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for installing the sound drivers on your computer.
6. Restart your computer to complete the process. Go back to the Device Manager and make sure the yellow question mark under "Sound" is gone. Test the sound by playing a CD, DVD or MP3 sound file.
