Disassembly Instructions for the HP DV9500 Notebook
The HP dv9500 is a 17-inch multimedia laptop. With bays for two hard drives, as well as an optical, it has all the storage and multimedia capabilities you could need. Unfortunately, that won't prevent parts of it from breaking down. If your motherboard or CPU goes bad in the dv9500, the only way to replace them is to completely disassemble the laptop. While you could take it to a repair service, with a little guidance, you can save yourself some money and do it yourself.
Instructions
1. Power down your dv9500 and disconnect the power cable. Remove any peripheral devices attached to the laptop. Lay the laptop face down on a table with the front facing you. Locate the battery in the back corner of the laptop. Slide the battery release latch to the left and pull the battery out of the laptop.
2. Remove the hard drive or drives. The dv9500 has two hard drive bays in the front corners of the laptop. Depending on your model you may have to remove two hard drives. The procedure is the same for both. Remove the two screws holding the hard drive cover in place and remove the cover. Grab the mylar tab on the hard drive bracket and lift it up until it disconnects from the computer. Slide the hard drive out of the bay.
3. Remove the memory modules and wireless card. Remove the two screws holding the memory module cover in place and remove the cover. Spread the retaining latches on the sides of the modules with your fingers and slide the modules out of the sockets. Next to the memory modules is the wireless card. Disconnect the wireless antenna cables from the card and remove the two screws holding the card in place. Slide the card out of the socket to remove it.
4. Remove the optical drive. Locate the optical drive on the right side of the computer. Remove the single screw holding it in place. Insert the end of a bent paper clip into the disk tray release access hole on the drive's tray. This will partially eject the tray. Grab the tray and slide it all the way out. Keep sliding until the optical drive slides out of the laptop base.
5. Remove any remaining screws on the bottom of your dv9500. Make sure to remove any screws that may be in the various open bays of the laptop. For example, six screws need to be removed in the battery bay and four more in the hard drive bays. There should be 22 screws in total. Turn the computer over and open the display panel as far as it will go.
6. Remove the switch cover and keyboard. the switch cover is located above the keyboard. Lift it up with your fingers and disconnect the cable from the motherboard. To remove the keyboard, remove the three screws holding it in place. Lift the rear end of the keyboard up and slide it back until it disengages from the front clips holding it in place. Turn the keyboard over so it is lying face down on the palm rest of your dv9500. Disconnect the cable from the motherboard and remove the keyboard.
7. Remove the speaker assembly and power button board. Disconnect the speaker cable from the motherboard. Remove the wireless antenna cables and microphone cable from their clips. Remove the two screws holding the speakers in place and remove the speakers. To remove the power button board, disconnect any cables still connected to it. Remove the single screw holding it in place and lift it out of the laptop base.
8. Remove the display panel. At this point the display cable should be the only one connected to the motherboard, but if there are others left, disconnect them at this time. Disconnect the display cable as well. Remove the three screws holding the display in place. Slide the display straight up and off of the laptop base.
9. Remove the top cover by removing the five screws holding it in place. Lift the top cover up and disconnect the touchpad cable and any other cables connecting it to the motherboard. Set the top cover aside.
10. Remove any remaining components, including the wireless switch board, USB board, and ExpressCard slot Bluetooth module. Remove them by disconnecting them from the motherboard and removing any screws holding them in place.
11. Remove the six screws holding the motherboard in place. Lift the motherboard up by its right side and pull it out of the laptop base.
12. Remove the CPU and cooling unit. Disconnect the fan cable running from the cooling unit to the motherboard. Loosen the three captive screws holding the cooling unit in place and pull the cooling unit straight up to remove it from the motherboard. To remove the CPU, turn the locking screw counter-clockwise until you hear a click and pull the CPU up and out of the socket.
