Install A Cpu Fan For Amd

A CPU heatsink fan helps to keep the processor cool.

When you install an AMD processor, you usually have a heatsink and fan assembly to go with the processor. A processor fan failing or not putting out enough cooling power can cause serious damage to the AMD processor, and replacing it is important to the overall performance of the computer. The heatsink and CPU fan are attached so you need to install the full heatsink and fan assembly on the CPU.

Instructions

1. Power your computer down and disconnect the power cable om the back of your computer tower.

2. Remove the computer tower's cover. Several removal methods include unscrewing the chassis screws on the top back and top bottom of the computer tower, sliding a panel open or removing thumbscrews. The removal method depends on the type of computer case you're using.

3. Locate the CPU fan and heatsink assembly. It should be located near the middle of your motherboard. If you aren't sure what it looks like, the heatsink is a large, aluminum finned piece underneath the black CPU fan.

4. Disconnect the fan's power lead cable from the motherboard pins. Use your thumb to press on the latch on the side of the heatsink to release it from the retaining spring. Repeat on the other side of the heatsink. Pull the heatsink out of the computer.

5. Spread a pea-sized amount of thermal paste on top of the processor. Use your thumb to press in the latch on the new heatsink assembly and press it into the retaining spring. Repeat on the other side. Connect the fan's power lead into the motherboard pins you uninstalled from the original fan assembly. Put the case cover back on the computer.
