Compare Laptop Screens

Some laptops have brighter and clearer displays than others.

Laptop screens are similar to desktop monitors and come in a variety of sizes and styles. When choosing a laptop, three of the most important aspects you'll want to compare are the screen's finish, backlight and resolution.

Finish

Some laptop screens have a glossy finish, while screens have a matte finish. A glossy finish will usually make a screen brither, with higher contrast and a greater viewing area. However, a glossy finish is also more relfective, creating more glare. They also show smudges and dirt more than a matte finish. If brightness is more important than glare, you'll probably want a glossy finish, but if you worry about reflections and smudges showing too much, then you may want a matte finish.

Backlight

Until recently, nearly all laptop displays were illuminated with CCFL (cold cathode flourescent lamps) but many newer laptops use LED lights. In an article on Laptop Magazine's website, writer Todd Haselton said that LEDs are "brighter and consume less power" than CCFLs and are also thinner and lighter.

Resolution

Resolutions for laptops can vary from 1024 x 576 pixels to 1920 x 1200 pixels. Haselton says that when in doubt, got for the higher resolution, as you can always change the settings to a lower resolution or increase the text size if you don't like it.
