Asus M2avm Hdmi Motherboard Problems

The Asus M2A-VM features an integrated digital video interface socket and a video graphics array socket. Although the DVI socket enables the computer to output digital video, it doesn't support high-definition video. To use a high-definition multimedia interface with the Asus M2A-VM, you must install an HDMI graphics card to the PC. But problems may occur if the graphics card isn't properly installed to the motherboard or if the motherboard isn't properly configured.

Hardware Configuration

The Asus M2A-VM features a built-in graphics card. If the integrated card isn't disabled in the basic/input output system, the HDMI ports on the dedicated graphics card won't work. The BIOS, accessed by pressing "Ctrl," "Alt" and "Del" at startup, is a low-level application that contains hardware configuration settings. To disable the integrated graphics card, boot to the BIOS, and then navigate to the "Advanced" screen. Go to the Onboard Device Configuration menu. Using the "Plus" and "Minus" keys, change the Primary Display Adapter to "PCIEx."

Missing Driver

The operating system uses a device driver, or software driver, to communicate with the HDMI graphics card connected to the ASUS M2A-VM motherboard. If the driver for the old graphics card is still installed, it will interfere with the driver for the new graphics card. The driver for the new graphics card must also be installed to the OS before the dedicated card is installed to the motherboard; otherwise, conflicts will occur. Until the OS recognizes the driver for the new graphics card, it won't recognize the HDMI capabilities of the card. Install the contents of the software CD -- packaged with the graphics card -- to the OS before adding the graphics card to the PC.

Loose Connection

At the edge of the graphics card are copper contacts that fit into the PCI Express slot. The contacts create a connection between the card and the motherboard, enabling the integrated circuits on the card to communicate with the Asus M2A-VM. If the contacts aren't inserted fully into the PCI Expression slot, the computer may not detect the card, or the computer may occasionally lose the signal from the monitor. Turn off the computer, remove the case cover, disconnect the power cable, and then shine a light on the expansion card. If the connector on the edge of the card is visible, it has not been fully installed to the M2A-VM.

Missing Power Cable

Most HDMI graphics cards require a 6-pin power connector. Some cards require two 6-pin connectors. At the time of publication, most power supply units provide at least one 6-pin connector, but not all do. If the computer fails to detect the graphics card, check for connector slots on the card. If the PSU does not have the required power connectors, find two Molex power connectors, then attach a Molex to 6-pin adapter to the connectors. Plug the 6-pin cable into the power slot on the graphics card.
