Overclock The Cpu On A Laptop

Optimize your processor speed.


Overclocking the CPU on a laptop can increase the processing speed up to 20 percent. The best CPU candidates for overclocking are the lower end Intel Pentium M series and the AMD Athlon XP series because these CPUs might possess more "headroom" to allow a workable increase in the clock speed of the processor. The worst possible choice for overclocking is the Pentium lll series due to their inherent high operating temperature, which is the major problem in laptop over-clocking. Also affecting the stability, performance and overall well-being of the laptop is the Front Side Bus (FSB) speed. An increase of more than 20 percent might cause the hard drive to crash. If this happens, shut the unit down immediately, reboot and use a lower clock speed in the next attempt. Instructions


1. Download and install CPU-Z and Prime95.


2. Reboot the laptop and turn off all unnecessary and redundant programs.


3. Open CPU-Z and note motherboard type. Download the corresponding ClockGen version for the motherboard.


4. Open ClockGen and slowly increase the front side bus (FSB) speed by 20 percent in increments of no more than a few percent at a time. Increasing the FSB clock speed increases the CPU speed by 15 times. An increase of 10 MHz in FSB increases the CPU speed by 150 MHz. Work slowly.


5. In CPU-Z, note the increase in the CPU clock speed by up to 20 percent in single-stage increments. Stop briefly at each increase. Make sure CPU temperature remains below 70 degrees centigrade and all other components are stable.


6. Open and run Prime95 for 30 to 60 minutes to test the stability of the CPU over-clock level. If Prime95 halts, immediately shut down the laptop, reboot and repeat Steps 4, 5 and 6 using lower values for the FSB and CPU.
