Build Your Own Virtual Home

You can design your own virtual home using Google Sketchup. Download this program to begin your home design---the process is uncomplicated and produces 3-D results.

Instructions

1. Download and install Google Sketchup from the website (see Resources).

2. Select one of the available templates.

3. Use the line tool to draw the floor plan of your house. Sketchup provides visual clues to guide you through the sketching process.

4. Click on the push/pull tool to select the polygon that defines the shape of the house, and pull it to the correct height. Use the measuring tools to check and confirm measurements. A rough, 3-D box shape of the house is completed.

5. Click on the line tool and draw the roof line. Select this line and use the move tool to position it to the desired height. Use the measuring tools to check and confirm. Make doors and windows by drawing in the opening and deleting the polygon. Continue to further refine the shape of your home.

6. Finish drawing the exterior and interior shapes and click on the Google 3D Warehouse icon to add furniture, windows and other items to complete your home.
