Dell Motherboard Tools

The motherboard is arguably the most essential computer component.

If you want to perform any major maintenance on a Dell computer, chances are good you will at one point or another need to access the motherboard. You may need to simply plug a cable in, remove it completely, or in extreme cases, make a repair to the motherboard itself. Regardless of what you need to do, there are a few tools you should have handy.

Anti-Static Wrist Strap

Static electricity can wreak havoc on sensitive electronics.

All computer parts, particularly motherboards, are very sensitive to static electricity. Wearing an anti-static wrist strap will keep your PC safe from this silent but deadly threat.

Phillips Screwdriver

A typical motherboard is held down by at least four screws.

You may or may not need tools to open up your Dell, but you will almost certainly need a Phillips screwdriver to remove the motherboard. Any standard size head should work fine, but try to find one that is magnetized. This will save you a lot of grief over lost screws.

Soldering Iron

Soldering irons require special training to use properly.

Soldering irons are used to fuse small metal components together. Have one handy if you need to repair a broken connection on the motherboard or reattach a capacitor or other small part. Keep in mind that soldering irons require special training to use and unless you have extensive computer repair experience, using one on your Dell motherboard is not a good idea.
