Dell's C840 is a utilitarian laptop intended for business use. Originally manufactured in 2002, the C840 is now somewhat outdated, but its Pentium 4 processor and expandable RAM have ensured that it stays usable. The C840 was designed to run the Windows XP operating system and hosts multiple upgrade options to tailor the unit to your needs.
Processor and Memory
The C840 runs on a mobile Pentium 4 processor, providing speeds between 1.4 and 1.8 GHz, depending on the model. The computer comes with 256 megabytes of DDR SDRAM, but it can be upgraded to up to 1 gigabyte for multitaskers. By default, the laptop ships with a CD-RW/DVD combo drive provided by Samsung and a 20GB hard drive.
Input/Output
The C840's 15.1-inch screen supports a resolution of up to 1600 by 1200 powered by a 64MB nVidia GeForce 440 Go chipset. In addition to onboard stereo speakers, the C840 also has ports for headphone, line-out and microphone-in. The computer features an 88-key keyboard, a trackpad and a trackpoint.
Connections
Two USB 2 ports, one FireWire port, one Ethernet port and one modem provide a wide range of connectivity options. Integrated wireless b networking allows the C840 to work on Wi-Fi hotspots, but not at the speed expected from modern computers. Two expansion slots support two Type II PC card expansions or one Type III PC card expansion. The computer uses an S-Video out port to send video to a television. It uses an add-on dongle to enable support for composite video.The computer also supports wireless infrared connections.
Physical
The C840 is a bulky laptop, weighing 7.95 pounds. The unit measures roughly 13 inches wide, 10.9 inches deep and 1.75 inches thick. A docking station port is included, allowing the laptop to e easily set up in one location. The C840 also features a modular expansion bay that can support any modular expansion designed for the Latitude series.
