Intel's D865GLC motherboard uses DDR memory. While, as of 2010, manufacturers have phased out this type of memory in favor DDR2 and DDR3, neither of these new versions work on the D865GLC. Intel recommends unbuffered, non-ECC, 2.6-volt modules with 184 pins. Modules meeting these specifications come in five compatible capacities. Each of these capacities are available in different speeds, three of which can work on the D865GLC. Regardless of the speed or capacity of individual memory modules, the board can handle no more than 4,096MB of memory.
DDR-400
DDR-400 is the fastest memory compatible with the D865GLC. This memory performs 400 million data transfers per second. This speed is otherwise referred to as PC-3200 because it transfers a maximum of 3,200MB per second. To use this memory, the board requires a processor with an 800 MHz system bus. The board's four memory slots can handle modules with either 64MB, 128MB, 256MB, 512MB, or 1,024MB capacities. This goes for all speeds.
DDR-333
DDR-333 is the middle of the road in terms of the data transfers per second the D865GLC can handle. This memory also goes by the name PC-2700. If using DDR-333, the D865GLC requires a processor with with an 800 MHz or a 533 MHz system bus. Intel states that when using a processor with an 800 MHz bus, DDR-333 performs 320 rather than 333 million transfers per second.
DDR-266
DDR-266, otherwise known as PC-2100, is the slowest type of memory compatible with the D865GLC. When using this memory speed, users have a choice between three processor bus speeds: 800 MHz, 533 MHz or 400 MHz. When deciding which speed of memory to use, note that in most cases, more memory results in better overall computer performance than a smaller amount of faster memory. In this case, it is best to get as close to 4,096MB as possible even if it means using the slower DDR-266 modules.
