Replace The Heat Sink In A Sony Vaio

The fan and heat sink in your Vaio.

The heat sink in your Sony Vaio is a metal assembly that connects to the motherboard of your computer and prevents the processor from overheating with help from your Vaio's internal fan. If your Vaio is running hot, chances are there are problems with the heat sink and it needs to be replaced.

Instructions

1. Turn off your Vaio and disconnect any power cables connected to the device. Slide the battery from its compartment on the right side of the computer.

2. Locate the single screw on the left side of the computer, near the top just below where the speaker assembly connects to the side of the laptop, and remove it.

3. Locate the rectangular speaker assembly just above the keyboard and slide it to the left to remove it from the computer. Remove all screws just above the keyboard.

4. Grip the top of the keyboard and slowly lift it up. Be careful because it is still connected to the computer via a thick ribbon cable that connects in the middle of the back of the keyboard. Use your fingers to unplug this ribbon from the back of the keyboard and set the keyboard aside. The fan and metal heat sink will now be visible in the top right corner of the laptop.

5. Remove the three screws on the corner of the fan that secure it to the computer. You can identify the fan by the plastic fan blades housed in a square plastic frame. Once the fan is removed, you'll notice the two metal bars that are still in the computer just above where the fan used to sit--this is the heat sink.

6. Remove the four screws securing the heat sink to the computer and remove the heat sink from the computer. Replace with a new heat sink and reassemble your Vaio in reverse of the order of steps you used to take it apart.
