Get Better Handles In Basketball

Learning handle the ball better in basketball is about athleticism, hand-eye coordination, love of the game and a desire to get better. The phrase "get better handles" means improving one's ball-handling ability. This is important for all basketball players but especially the point guard, who directs most of the action on the floor.


Instructions


1. Get to practice early and work on dribbling with both hands. For 15 minutes before the start of practice, move around the gym with basketballs in each hand. Dribble 20 feet at medium speed and turn right. Dribble 20 more feet and turn left. Dribble 20 feet straight ahead and close by dribbling 20 feet backwards.


2. Get stronger in your hands. A good point guard has to be able to protect the ball. Your dribbling skill will help you at this but at times your opponent will get his hands on the ball in an attempt to steal it. You cannot lose these battles. By lifting 15-, 20- and 25-pound dumbbells, you will gradually get stronger in your hands and use this ability to hold on to the ball.


3. Set up cones in a rectangular pattern for an offensive drill. When attacking the basket, you need to stay on the outside of the first two cones you reach and then cut immediately to the basket with the ball. You want to be explosive in your dribbling and once you reach the second cone, you demonstrate your ability to get to the basket quickly.


4. Play the game. There are drills and exercises that a player can do all day long that will help him improve his ball handling ability. However, the best thing is to put these drills to the test by playing the game. Whether you are in playing an organized game or you just go to the neighborhood playground, great ball handlers have gotten better by playing the game every single day.
