Configure Hdmi On A Motherboard

An HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) interface allows you to connect digital audiovisual devices--such as a high-definition television--to your computer. Some motherboards include an integrated HDMI port, but older ones only provide a VGA or DVI video ports. To configure HDMI on your motherboard, you must install a graphics card with HDMI support, and then disable the old onboard graphics in the computer's setup menu.

Instructions

1. Review your computer's specifications before purchasing a new graphics card. High-end graphics cards use PCI Express (PCIe) x16 graphics interface, but some motherboards may lack a PCI Express x16 slot. Similarly, your power supply may not provide enough voltage to power your computer and your graphics card simultaneously. You may need to upgrade your power supply before you can install a new HDMI video card.

2. Power on your computer and sign into Windows as an administrator. Click "Start." Type "devmgmt.msc" into the search box.

3. Press "Enter" to open Device Manager. Expand "Display adapters," then double-click on your current graphics card.

4. Select the "Driver" tab, then click "Uninstall." Follow the onscreen prompts to uninstall your current video card.

5. Click "OK." Turn off your computer. Remove the power cord and any other cables connected to the I/O (Input/Output) panel located on the back of the computer.

6. Unscrew and remove the cover from the computer case. Touch the chassis to ground yourself, or, ideally, put on an anti-static wrist strap and stand on an anti-static mat.

7. Line up the gold pins on the end of the video card with the inserts on your motherboard's PCI Express x16 slot. Install the graphics card securely into the slot. Do not exert too much force on the card, and do not touch the gold pins. Avoid touching the surface of the card itself; handle the card by its edges.

8. Screw the card into place. Insert the 6-pin PCIe power connector into the appropriate port on the HDMI video card.

9. Reconnect the power cable and any other devices to the I/O panel. Power on the computer.

10. Press the key as shown on the boot screen to access the BIOS. Turn off "Onboard Graphics" and change "Graphics Adapter" to "PCIe," "PCI Express" or "PCIe x16" to configure the HDMI port on your motherboard.

11. Review the legend on the bottom or top of the BIOS to find out which key to press to save your settings and exit from the BIOS.

12. Boot to the operating system. Insert your installation CD into the disc drive to install the new graphics adapter to your computer.
