Cleaning A Laptop Screen With Water

Laptop

Between dust particles that fly through the air and land on anything nearby and fingerprints, laptop screens are easily dirtied. A dirty laptop screen can not only be a distraction to the user, but can damage the screen as well. It's best to avoid harsh chemicals, and water is perhaps the safest choice. There are only a few things you may need to know before you're on your way to having a beautifully clean laptop screen, just like the day you bought it.

Keep Safety in Mind

It isn't enough just to turn off your laptop before cleaning it, especially with water; you must unplug it as well. Laptops run on electricity and it's common knowledge that water and electricity can cause a problem when mixed. Detach any cords and move your laptop to a safe area before cleaning it.

Never use tap water. There are chemicals in regular tap water, some of which may cause your laptop screen damage. Use only distilled water to ensure the safety of your laptop.

Put the water into a spray bottle and do not spray the screen directly. The possibility of water going where you don't want it is too great. It could drip down the screen and leak into the internal workings of the laptop, or an errant twist of the wrist while spraying could lead to water in the keyboard and may cause problems later. The safest way is to spray the cloth you're using to clean with and gently wipe the screen with it.

Cleaning the Laptop Screen

While distilled water alone can be quite effective, it works better if you mix it with three percent hydrogen peroxide in equal parts. White vinegar is a good substitution for hydrogen peroxide. Be careful to avoid anything with alcohol or ammonia in it as this will only damage the screen.

Avoid using paper towels for cleaning. Paper towels are made with harsh fibers that can easily scratch the screen. Find the softest piece of cloth you can, such as a terry cloth, and use that. Wipe the screen gently being sure not to push too hard on it. Use a second, very soft clean cloth to wipe it dry. Allow it to sit for at least 10-15 minutes before plugging it back in and turning it back on to ensure that there isn't excess moisture anywhere.
