Connect A Cd Writer To A Motherboard

Connect and install a CD burner in your computer.

If you have a computer without a CD writer, you are missing a chance to create your own data and multimedia discs. A CD writer will allow you to create backups of important data and files, create your CD audio or MP3 disks and even burn movies you can play in a DVD player.

Installing a CD writer is not that difficult; however, you do need some basic knowledge of computer hardware and the ability to use a screwdriver. Therefore, instead of paying a shop to do the work for you, install the CD writer yourself in about half an hour.

Instructions

1. Shut down the computer and disconnect the AC adapter and other cables from it. Place the computer on a flat, stable work surface.

2. Remove the screws from the rear of the computer that hold the right-side panel cover in place. Remove the panel cover and set it aside.

3. Locate an open 5.25-inch bay in the top of the computer. Reach in through the rear of the bay and push the plastic slot cover out the front of the computer.

4. Verify the jumper on the back of the CD burner is in the master setting position. Refer to the diagram on top of the CD writer, and then place the plastic jumper over the correct set of pins if needed.

5. Slide the CD burner into the open bay on the computer until the screw holes on the drive align with the screw holes in the mounting bay slot. Insert the captive screws that came with the CD writer into the holes and tighten them with the Phillips head screwdriver.

6. Find an available 1.5-inch Molex power connector from the power supply unit and plug it into the rectangular adapter port of the same size on the back of the CD burner drive.

7. Push the black connector adapter on the IDE ribbon cable onto the pin block on the rear of the CD writer. Ensure that the holes in the cable connector align with the pins on the drive and push the connector firmly into place.

8. Press the blue connector on the IDE ribbon cable into an available IDE slot on the motherboard (on most motherboards there are two). If both IDE slots are open, use the blue one. Press the cable connector firmly into the motherboard slot.

9. Replace the panel cover and secure it with the retaining screws. Place the computer back in its original location and plug in all the cables. Power on the computer.

10. Set up the new CD writer in the BIOS (refer to your computer or motherboard manual for specific instructions). Reboot the computer. Your operating system should detect the new CD writer and automatically configure it for use.
