Disassemble an Acer Aspire 5520-5912


Disassembling your Acer Aspire 5520 will allow you to make your own repairs and upgrades. Disassembling your Acer will allow you to strip it down to the motherboard, and from there you will be able to replace key components like the hard drive, memory and CPU.


Instructions


1. Disconnect the power cable and lay the laptop face down on a table. Make sure the front of the laptop is facing you. Remove the battery from the back of the laptop base. Slide the release switch to the unlocked position and pull the battery out of the bay.


2. Remove the two screws holding the hard drive cover in place. The hard drive is located in the front, left corner of the laptop base. Once the screws have been removed, lift the hard drive cover up and off of the base. Slide the hard drive to the left to disconnect it from the motherboard and lift it out of the hard drive bay.


3. Remove the four screws holding the thermal cover in place. The thermal cover is the large cover on the right side of the laptop. Lift the cover up and remove it.


4. Spread the latched on the memory modules to pop them up. Slide the modules out of their sockets. Disconnect the wireless antenna cables from the wireless card and remove the two screws holding the wireless card in place. Lift up and remove the wireless card. Underneath the wireless card is the modem card. Remove the screw holding the card in place. Lift the card up and disconnect the modem cable from the motherboard. Remove the modem card.


5. Remove the CPU fan in the back right corner of the laptop. Disconnect the fan cable from the motherboard and remove the three screws holding the fan in place. Lift the fan up and remove it. Remove the four screws holding the CPU heat sink in place and slide it toward the front of the computer to remove it. Turn it the locking screw below the CPU counter-clockwise until it clicks. Lift the CPU straight up and remove it.


6. Remove the optical drive by removing the screw on the right side of the thermal cover area. Use your finger to push the back end of the optical drive toward the outside of the laptop. Grab the drive and pull it out of the laptop base. If you still have the dummy cards in the PC card and memory card slots, press the eject buttons to remove them.


7. Remove any screws from the bottom of the laptop. There should be 10 total. Turn the laptop over and open the display panel.


8. Lift up the keyboard securing strip, located along the top of the keyboard, and remove it. Lift the keyboard up and disconnect the keyboard cable from the motherboard. Disconnect the LCD cable and microphone cable from the motherboard. Pull the wireless antenna cables through the hole in the motherboard.


9. Remove the four screws holding the display panel hinges in place. Lift the display panel straight up to remove it.


10. Remove the eight screws holding the top cover in place. Disconnect any cables, including the left speaker cable and LED board cable, running from the top cover to the motherboard. Lift the top cover up by the front end and remove it from the laptop base.


11. Disconnect the USB board, Bluetooth and right speaker cables from the motherboard. Remove the screws holding the three components in place and remove them. The USB and Bluetooth boards are located in the front right corner of the motherboard and the right speaker is in the back right corner.


12. Remove the screw holding the motherboard in place. Lift up the front end of the motherboard and slide it out of the laptop base.
