Troubleshoot A Hp Pavilion That Has No Power

Hewlett-Packard's HP Pavilion line of computers encompasses many different models of laptops. HP Pavilions use a battery charged with an AC adapter made specifically for a laptop. If a problem occurs with the battery or the adapter, your HP Pavilion may not charge properly, your battery life may be decreased or the laptop may not power up at all.

Instructions

1. Boot up your laptop if possible. Click "Start," then "Control Panel." Choose the "Power Options" setting. Look through the settings on this page to see if any power-management options are causing problems with your computer usage. For example, if your HP Pavilion's display is turning off when it shouldn't be, you can adjust the length of time it takes for the screen to turn off under both "Adapter" and "Battery Power." Click "Change Advanced Power Settings" to check any of those power management settings for problems as well. What may seem like a power problem with your laptop could be intended behavior under a particular setting. Click "Save Changes" if you alter any settings.

2. Turn your HP Pavilion off. Unplug the power adapter from the wall and from your laptop. Check the adapter's connection around the "brick" on the cord to ensure that both halves of the cord are correctly connected. Check the cable for any physical defects. If the cable is physically damaged, replace the entire adapter. Check your laptop's manual to ensure you are using the correct adapter for your laptop model.

3. Flip your HP Pavilion over, so that the bottom is facing up. Slide the battery lock to the "Unlocked" position and slide the battery release button. Check the battery for physical damage. Set the battery aside and plug the adapter into the laptop. Check your HP Pavilion on just AC power. If you do not encounter the power problem, the battery is most likely faulty and needs to be replaced. Your battery's effectiveness diminishes over time, so if your total battery charge goes down you don't have a laptop problem as much as normal battery wear and tear.

4. Use a different power outlet if you cannot pinpoint the problem to a battery or adapter problem. Move the AC adapter from a power strip to a wall outlet or vice versa.
