Troubleshoot A Memory Upgrade On An Acer Aspire T650

Improperly installed RAM typically prevents the computer from working.

While upgrading the memory in your computer is a relatively easy way to improve performance, speed and reliability, one wrong move could compromise the entire installation. The easiest way to troubleshoot the RAM installation is to just repeat the installation steps, taking care to specifically follow each direction exactly. Assuming you've purchased the correct type of memory, simply retracing your steps is often the easiest solution.

Instructions

Verify the Type of RAM

1. Open the user's manual that came with your Aspire T650. Read the table of contents until you find the memory section and flip to the appropriate page.

2. Compare the type of RAM specified in the manual with the information on the packaging your new RAM came in. The information should be identical. For example, the T650 requires either PC400, 533 or 667 DDR2 memory. The new RAM's package should have one of those numbers on it.

3. Continue to the next section if the RAM type specified in the manual matches the type you used in the upgrade. If not, you'll need to perform the upgrade again with the proper type of memory.

Retrace your Steps

4. Turn the T650 off and unplug all cords connecting to the PC tower. Unscrew and remove the side casing the same way you did the first time you upgraded, placing the loose screws somewhere safe.

5. Remove the RAM by pressing outward on the two clips locking the memory module in place. Reinsert the memory, installing the largest capacity module in the first slot. The manual will tell you which order the slots are arranged in if it's not obvious through markings on the slots or motherboard.

6. Verify the locking clips on either side of the RAM module are securely fastened. Test this by very gently pulling on the RAM, if it moves, it's not locked in properly. After the RAM is correctly inserted and locked in place, put the side panel back on the tower and plug everything back in.

7. Power on the computer and wait for Windows to load. Right-click the desktop and click "Properties" to make sure the memory specifications listed are correct, though if you've gotten this far, it probably worked.
